lyrics

Stone keeps a hundred stories high, asleep like weary beasties after romping,
Geographers, chalk in their hands, mark up the sky map with new stars,
The amber glow of torches in the rain is filled with flying sandy droplets,
The crescent of the moon, perched on my sofa like a golden cat.

Dead fish rust on the floors of swimming pools, amid the black of coals and roses,
Merchants and semi-naked girls, and jailed prisoners and poets,
A band of policemen blows into their trumpets with a melancholic air,
Meanwhile the god of philistines is counting stars and souls and shillings.

The city's fairy underside is home to tritons, whales and shiny dolphins
Who dwell in pitch-black murky waters filling scruffy pubs and cellars
Phantasmic ferns where gryphons hide, huge bells and sunken comets on the bottom,
Oh stony jungle, pray how long until a flood sweeps you away?

(Bohdan-Ihor Antonych, 1936)
